Once your gown is steamed, keep it hanging somewhere safe and give it plenty of room. If it’s shoved back into a garment bag or packed tightly into a car, those wrinkles can make their way right back.
Can I Steam My Wedding Dress Myself?
Yes, but with caution.
Wedding gowns are made from fabrics and construction techniques that are very different from your everyday clothing. Your gown may include delicate lace, intricate beading, layers of tulle, appliqués, structured elements, or specialty fabrics.

If you’re steaming your gown yourself, keep these tips in mind:
- Start With a Clean Steamer
- Make sure your steamer is clean and that you’re using fresh water. You don’t want mineral deposits, residue, or anything else from the steamer getting onto your gown.
- Let the Steamer Heat Up Completely
- Don’t start steaming while the machine is still warming up. Allow it to reach its full temperature so you’re getting a consistent flow of steam.
- Keep the Steamer Away From the Fabric
- Avoid pressing the steamer directly against your gown. Instead, hold the steamer a short distance away from the fabric and allow the steam to gently relax the wrinkles.
- Work From Top to Bottom
- Start at the top of the gown and work your way down. This helps you avoid accidentally creating new wrinkles in areas you’ve already steamed.
- Give Your Gown Room to Breathe
Hang your gown somewhere with plenty of space around it. You want the fabric to hang naturally while you’re steaming. For especially full skirts, you may need to work section by section to make sure every layer gets the attention it needs.
